Can Bearded Dragons Eat Spiders? (Caring For Your Pet)

Yes, Bearded Dragons can eat spiders but this doesn’t mean they should eat them. Spiders can be venomous and even be infested with parasites.

It’s more or less inevitable your Bearded Dragon will at some point in their life eat a household spider. This usually isn’t something to be concerned with but it shouldn’t become a regular occurrence.

In this article, I am going to discuss the reasons why your Bearded Dragon shouldn’t eat spiders and what you can feed them instead.

Why Shouldn’t Bearded Dragons Eat Spiders?

Although using your Bearded Dragon to clean up the arachnids from your household may seem like a good idea I don’t recommend it.

Here are 4 reasons to avoid using your Bearded Dragon as a spider catcher:

Spiders May Be Venomous

Your Bearded Dragon could become seriously ill or even killed if it’s bitten by a venomous spider.

Venomous spiders aren’t in every corner of the world, so I recommend researching your local area and learning about the venomous spiders in your location.

If your Bearded Dragon has been bitten by a venomous spider, contact your veterinarian immediately for advice.

Spiders May Have Parasites

Spiders eat other insects, and unlike the clean diet you provide your pets, these spiders eat whatever they find. More often than not, spiders eat flies.

Flies carry parasites and diseases which can easily make your Bearded Dragon unwell.

Spiders Offer No Nutrition Benefit For Bearded Dragons

When we feed our Bearded Dragons, we offer them a varied diet including proteins, vegetation, fruits, and supplements to help them thrive.

Spiders offer no nutrient or mineral value to Bearded Dragons, so it is just an unnecessary risk when you allow your Bearded Dragon to eat them.

Sometimes Spiders Are Helpful To Keep Around

As I mentioned earlier, spiders eat flies. They do this by catching them in their webs. So why would we want to allow our pets to eat something that is actually keeping our homes insect-free?

I believe spiders have an undeserved bad reputation when they’re not doing much except keep your homes as insect-free as they can.

Should I Be Worried If My Bearded Dragon Eats A Spider?

No, if your Bearded Dragon eats a spider you don’t need to go into a panic. The standard household spider won’t do your pet any harm, it’s just one of those things.

If you saw what the spider looked like but don’t know what it was, you can always look it up to identify if it’s something to be concerned with.

I work on the rule that, the brighter colored the spider the more reason to be concerned. Usually bright green or red.

Another thing to do is to monitor your beardie over a 24-hour period, if they begin to display unusual behaviors then I recommend contacting your vet for expert advice.

Now you know spiders can be eaten by Bearded Dragons, it isn’t always the best idea to allow it to happen.

Remember to familiarize yourself with the spiders in the area where you live and if there are any to keep an eye on.
