Health Risks Of Feeding Bearded Dragons Coconut

Bearded Dragon Staring Into Camera

When introducing a new food into your Bearded Dragons diet you need to be aware of the potential risks it can pose. I recommend monitoring your pet beardie for at least 24 hours after adding new food to their diet in case of any adverse reactions.

Improper Calcium-Phosphorus Ratio

Having an improper balance of calcium to phosphorus can lead to diminished intestinal calcium absorption in Bearded Dragons and can lead to illnesses such as metabolic bone disease.

The calcium-phosphorus ratio in coconuts is approximately 1:8. Bearded Dragons require a ratio of 1:1 at the minimum and ideally a ratio of 2:1 to promote healthy bone growth.

Different Types Of Coconut

There are different types of coconut available and it’s important to know what ones you can feed your Bearded Dragon. The main three coconut items to feed your beardie are coconut milk, shredded coconut, and coconut oil.

Coconut Milk

Adding coconut milk is easy to add to your Bearded Dragons diet. It helps supply them with the energy they need to go about their daily life.

A few important things to note when feeding your beardie coconut milk is to ensure it is at room temperature when given to them and to only offer it in moderation to prevent an upset stomach.

Always use coconut milk free from added sugars and preservatives.

Although coconut milk is a liquid it should never replace their fresh water bowl.

Shredded Coconut

Shredded coconut is a great treat to add to your Bearded Dragons diet. You need to ensure you’re using organic and unsweetened coconut when feeding to avoid any added sugars and preservatives.

In my experience Bearded Dragons get a bit excited when being fed shredded coconut so I recommend feeding by hand or with tweezers to prevent them from swallowing too much at once and choking.

When offering food to your Bearded Dragon, the food item always needs to be no bigger than the gap between their eyes.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is another good form of coconut to add to your Bearded Dragons diet. It’s a source of medium-chain fatty acids this provides energy and protein breakdown synthesis ensuring a smoother digestion.

I recommend adding one to two drops of coconut oil into one meal per week to offer maximum benefits and prevent overfeeding.

Preparing Coconut Oil

When purchasing coconut oil for your Bearded Dragon, follow this checklist to ensure the product is free of dangerous contaminants.

  • Organic
  • Cold-pressed
  • Unrefined

Feeding Frequency

As I have mentioned a number of times throughout this article, coconut should only be fed to your Bearded Dragon in moderation. I work on the rule of “little is more”.

I recommend only adding coconut into your Bearded Dragons diet one meal per week.

Important Notice: Never force-feed your Bearded Dragon because you think they need specific foods. If they don’t want to eat it, it probably means they don’t like it.

The amount per serving is also important to keep on top of, I recommend when using coconut only use a leveled teaspoon amount.

Coconut milk should be offered in a shallow dish, and again only offer as much that will fit on a teaspoon.

Coconut oil only needs one to two drops added to a meal.

Can Bearded Dragons Have Coconut Water?

Yes, Bearded Dragons can have coconut water. It is important to remember, even though it is called water, it shouldn’t replace your beardies fresh water dish in the enclosure. Bearded Dragons need a constant supply of fresh water.

Can I Put Coconut Oil On My Bearded Dragon?

Yes, you can put coconut oil on your Bearded Dragons body. It has numerous health benefits, it has antibacterial, antifungal, and antiseptic properties.

The most common use of coconut oil is to help your Bearded Dragon’s shedding process. It helps loosen the skin and combat any stuck shed.

Another useful method to combat stuck sheds is misting Bearded Dragons.

Although Bearded Dragons can eat coconut, it’s important to remember the considerations before adding new foods to their diet.

Coconut has nutritional benefits but these don’t come without risks. Prepare the coconut correctly and monitor your Bearded Dragon when feeding it to them.
