The 120 gallon Carolina Custom tank is an excellent tank for Ball Python owners, it’s easy to assemble and provides plenty of space to pack in decor, such as branches and multiple hide spots.

The instructions are a simple to follow step by step guide making assembly a no-hassle process.

The only issue I have with this tank is the glass sliding doors don’t have a handle, so typically the locking mechanism is used to open it. However, I find these self-stick handles are a great accessory to prevent unwanted fingerprint marks on the glass and provide easy access to the enclosure.

The 120 gallon variant of the ReptiZoo glass tank is the same size as the Carolina Custom, ensuring ample space for decorations, however, the weight is heavier coming in at 90lbs. This makes maneuvering difficult for one person.

The all-glass panels provide a great 270° view of your pet, with an added bonus of tinted side and back panels, resulting in the prevention of stress for your Ball Python.

The screen top makes applying your light and heat bulbs easy because it allows UVB and heat penetration whilst keeping the bulbs a safe distance from your pet.

This 85 gallon variant of the ReptiZoo glass terrarium is great for Ball Pythons because they typically feel safer in enclosed spaces, so excess decor is not required in this enclosure. However, I recommend providing branches and a minimum of two hide spots placed at different ends of the tank.

This model has a raised hollow base, making it great to add underfloor heating increasing the temperatures to the required levels.

The sliding doors make it easily accessible for feeding and cleaning, unfortunately, like the Carolina Custom, it doesn’t come with handles so supplying your own is advised.

There are mesh panels on the side and top of the tank, providing ventilation throughout the enclosure, and the top mesh allows for great UVB and heat penetration.

OIIBO 67 Gallon Tank

Product Specifications

ManufacturerOIIBO
MaterialTempered Glass
Dimensions48”x18”x18”
Size67 Gallon
Weight68 lbs

This tank is a little bit under the size I’d recommend for an adult Ball Python, however, it’s great for Juveniles, meaning it’ll be suitable for your pet until around 36 months of age.

It has a sleek look about it, thanks to the white finishings of the color, making it easy to place in most rooms within your home.

Like the rest of the tanks I’ve discussed in this list, it has sliding doors, as you can see, I prefer sliding doors over double hinge doors because it is easy to access the enclosure.

It offers a 3.7” hollow base with a maximum waterproof level of 2.1”, this similar to the 85 gallon ReptiZoo provides a great opportunity for underfloor heating. However, due to the build and quality of the product, it retains heat and humidity very well so may not be necessary.

I recommend having thermometers and hygrometers available to regularly check the temperature and humidity levels.

  • Ventilated mesh lit
  • Protected wiring management holes
  • Aluminum skeleton build

Pros

  • Maintains heat and humidity levels
  • Raised base for substrate heating
  • UVB and heat penetration
  • Ventilation
  • Easy assembly with video guide
  • Security lock
  • 360° view of your pet

Cons

  • White finishing shows dirt and dust more

What To Consider When Purchasing Enclosures

When preparing to own a Ball Python, ensuring you have the best setup for you and them is crucial, here is a checklist for you to go through when choosing and setting up the enclosure;

Is it Safe?

  • Is the structure stable and durable?
  • Have you got it in a good location away from direct sunlight and busy areas in your home?
  • Does it have locking mechanisms to prevent escapes?
  • Is the glass cracked?

Sizing

You need to consider your Ball Pythons age when purchasing an enclosure, if you have a baby Ball Python, you shouldn’t buy a 67 or 120 gallon tank. The vast amount of space will cause them stress and potential sickness.

Hatchlings: 10-20 Gallon Terrarium (20” x 11” x 13”)

Juveniles: 20-40 Gallon Terrarium (36 x 18” x 18”)

Adult: 40-75 Gallon Terrarium (48” x 18” x 21”)

Adults can thrive in a 120 gallon enclosure as long as there is plenty of decoration such as; branches, sturdy plants, a minimum of 2 hide spots, caves, and, burrowing opportunities.

Protip: Remember, the more Ball Pythons can cram into small enclosed spaces within their enclosure, the better.

Cleaning

Are you able to commit to conducting spot checks daily for feces and urine, to prevent mold and bacteria build up within the enclosure?

Substrates within the enclosure will need to be replaced monthly, and the terrarium cleaned with reptile-safe cleaning products.

This provides your Ball Python with a clean and healthy environment.

Access

Access is a big thing with enclosures, you’ll need the doors and lid to be easily opened and removed to make it a simple process for you to feed your Ball Python and clean the enclosure.

Humidity Retention

Ball Pythons are from Central and Western Africa, making them tropical-dwelling snakes, meaning they require a warm and humid habitat.

So when you’re choosing the tank, you need to be mindful of what the material is made of to ensure you’re able to keep the humidity levels and temperature correct.

You should avoid materials like wood, simply because the high humidity levels will encourage the wood to mold and decay. I recommend tempered glass, it is great for retaining heat and humidity.

Summary

After examining the 5 best ball python enclosures, it is clear that each option has its own unique features and drawbacks.

You need to weigh up the pros and cons of each enclosure to decide which is the best option for you and your pet.

Following the checklist I’ve provided in this article, you’ll be able to provide a safe and healthy habitat for your Ball Python.
